The ‘one piece’ rose brass bell comes with a standard flare and bell ring, there are Monel valves and a specially designed leadpipe by Smith-Watkins specifically developed to maximise the performance of this particular horn. Fitting the supplied 5C mouthpiece, the 251SW is free blowing and those Monel valves are super smooth - it’s a breeze from the top right down to the bottom F sharp. And that purpose built leadpipe really does help. . . there’s an amazing degree of freedom, allowing the player to shape their sound, bend notes etc . . . Easily driven, the 251SW offers plenty of power and has a good dynamic range. The sound is bright, with a lot of depth and body and there is a lovely sweet, warm tonality - further accentuated when we fitted our own 3C. Shipped in a semi-rigid case that is a C21st update on the original rectangular model, it has a shaped styrofoam plush lined interior, a 3\/4 zip, a full face zippered pouch pocket, a back harness stashed behind a velcroed storage flap and two top mounted ‘D’ rings carrying a shoulder strap. Having both tried and been impressed by some of their earlier instruments I was keen to see what they had conjured up now. This interest was further enhanced by the fact that this instrument is a movement into new higher market areas for the Packer team and this means that you are battling with tougher opposition. Firstly the model number - 'SW' shows that, once again, Richard Smith (of Smith-Watkins) has been involved both in the overall design and, specifically, the all important lead pipe. The 'LT' refers to the fact that the bell is very lightweight which, combined with the nickel silver reverse leadpipe, is an interesting combination on a large bore instrument.\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"On first sight I was impressed by the build quality - lovely construction and the slides and valves all moved sweetly and positively. Not only are Packers collaborating with the best designers in the west they are also using western grades of materials and, it seems, the best technology to ensure good construction quality. This instrument is over £1000 less than my own trumpet, but the build quality appeared to be equal. It's impressive even when you open the case and take a look at it.\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"That's the cosmetics dealt with, but how does it all combine as a working tool for a musician? I tested this trumpet both at home and 'in the field'. My initial tests made me feel so confident in the instrument’s capability that it has now been heard by many people who have been to see Chicago in the West End. The sound is pleasingly warm and centred even at extreme dynamics and its overall characteristics make it ideal for jazz, big band or show music etc. Capable of power or subtlety with equal ease.\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"Frankly, at this price, this instrument is amazing value. Packer's intention in bringing higher quality \u0026amp; performance to the market place at accessible prices has certainly been achieved. I have been happy to use it professionally and will be using it again on Boxing day when I take NYJO to the Today programme. This trumpet is without doubt capable of professional performance, but priced to be accessible to players doing the higher ABRSM grade exams. The new JP378 Sterling in lacquer came straight out of the wrapper and felt right, the fourth valve was sensibly placed and the playing position didn't tug at my dodgy back either. I was curious to see it had a tapered lead pipe that fed into a valve block that was very well laid out and used straight through piping where possible. It looked well made with a decent finish. So far, so good then. It got better when I gave it a decent blow in all registers and on full volume it didn't break up and produced one of the nicest tones I have heard for quite a while. Played quietly, it was a really nice blow. It was in tune also – without messing with the first valve slide “a la Sovereign”. I was pleased that the stays and construction were beefed up, apparently taking account of having a hard life in front of it. It came in a robust, wheeled hard case, which had decent sized wheels and had good fittings inside (including a music compartment). Only criticism were the rather strong valve springs fitted to this one. The valves didn't look as though they needed them this strong, sure they will wear in but I would try weaker ones. Would I like one? Yes. Would I swap a Sovereign for one? Probably yes, especially considering this would cost me nearly a new euphonium short of the Sovereign. It seems another collaboration with quality instrument makers Sterling has produced the goods. The British brass band style BBb bass has always been an unwieldy beast: every instrument seems to have different characteristics, it is usually very hard work to achieve a good round sound, and, personally, I feel very tired after playing one even for a short time.
